Though the Grateful Dead never performed at the University of Tennessee, their shows in Nashville and Memphis, particularly the memorable 1972 performance at Vanderbilt University, deeply resonated with local audiences. Jerry's commitment to bluegrass and Southern musical traditions significantly influenced the Dead’s sound, particularly their blend of country rock and psychedelic improvisation. This fusion made the band a natural fit for Tennessee’s rich musical heritage, where bluegrass, country, and folk were deeply embedded in the local culture. Volunteer fans, drawn to nearby Nashville for the Dead’s shows, embraced this blend of styles, contributing to the formation of a Deadhead community up on Rocky Top.
