University of Illinois x Grateful Dead

Officially licensed by the University of Illinois and the Grateful Dead - available exclusively through Class Trip. The Grateful Dead and the University of Illinois crossed paths a couple of times, turning Assembly Hall into a swirling sea of sound. Their first stop was on February 21 and 22, 1973, right in the middle of their peak early-’70s era—tight, exploratory, and packed with jams that sent the crowd into orbit. They came back on December 2, 1981, bringing that polished-yet-still-wild ’80s energy with them. Both shows gave students at Urbana-Champaign a front-row seat to the Dead’s evolving sound, proving that even at a school known for academic rigor, a little improvisation goes a long way. While the band never played at Horton Field House (that was Illinois State in 1978), their presence at U of I left its mark, adding another layer to the university’s already vibrant music history.
