A favorite of the Grateful Dead, the band played the University of Oregon often, most notably at MacArthur Court and Autzen Stadium. From their early ’69 show at Mac Court (one of their biggest venues at the time) to Autzen in ’78, Oregon wasn’t just a tour stop...it was a second home. The Dead played on or around campus more than 20 times, making UO one of their most historically relevant college campuses. Oregon was home turf for much of the extended Dead family, Ken Kesey, the Pranksters, and a road crew full of locals. Look up the Veneta show. You’ll get it. These weren’t just gigs, they were reunions. That spirit still hums through Eugene: in the tailgates, river swims, print shops, garage bands, and paint-streaked vans chasing that same feeling. Call it homegrown psychedelia. Call it Northwest soul. Whatever it is, it started in Eugene, and it never left.

On November 15, 1971, the Austin Municipal Auditorium swapped football chants for Truckin’ and Dark Star as the Grateful Dead rolled into town. Longhorns used to game-winning plays got a different kind of thrill—Jerry’s solos stretching deep into the night, the crowd roaring for jams instead of touchdowns. The Lone Star State met West Coast cool, and for a few hours, Austin became a Deadhead’s paradise. The set was stacked with classics like Bertha and Big Railroad Blues, proving that even in Texas, where country reigns supreme, there was plenty of room for some psychedelic rock. Whether you were a seasoned fan or just a curious local, that night was something special—one where the Dead turned Austin into their own musical playground, and the Longhorns faithful got a taste of what it meant to truly go where the music takes you.
