The Grateful Dead’s influence in Athens, Georgia, and at the University of Georgia is significant, particularly through their shows in and around the Atlanta area (37, but who's counting). Athens is home vibrant music scene, which was already burgeoning with acts like R.E.M., Widespread Panic, and The B-52's. Athens is known as a birthplace of modern alternative rock and new wave music, and was also home to the country's first legit college music scene in the 1970s.

On October 19, 1971, the Grateful Dead rolled into Northrop Auditorium at the University of Minnesota and made history. It was the very first show with keyboardist Keith Godchaux, and the music reflected that spark with fiery versions of “Bertha” and “Truckin’,” alongside the debut of future staples like “Tennessee Jed” and “Jack Straw.” Broadcast live across the Twin Cities, the night became a touchstone for Deadheads in the Midwest, cementing Minnesota’s place in the band’s story and a new chapter In Grateful Dead history. Our officially licensed University of Minnesota x Grateful Dead collection celebrates that legacy, where campus tradition meets timeless improvisation, and every piece carries the spirit of a show that changed the band forever.
