The Grateful Dead played a number of shows around Oklahoma, including a memorable one on October 11, 1977. They also rocked two back-to-back shows at the Oklahoma City Fairgrounds Arena on October 18 and 19, 1973, just down I-35 from Norman and the University of Oklahoma. These concerts featured their famous "Dark Star" jam and the debut of the "Mind Left Body Jam"​. The October show in Norman featured an all time Franklins Tower, that has kept the message boards buzzing for years. This was a period of heightened cultural exchange between countercultural music scenes and university students, fostering a sense of community among Deadheads in the state and region.
