The Music Never Stopped in Berkeley

Before the stadium tours and generations of Deadheads, the Grateful Dead were a Bay Area band finding their sound. Just across the bridge, Cal Berkeley was becoming a symbol of free speech, creative expression, and the belief that doing things differently could change everything.

That shared spirit found a home at the Greek Theatre. From 1967 through 1989, the Dead played the iconic Cal venue 29 times, turning weekends in the Berkeley hills into a lasting part of the band’s live legacy. Music, community, and campus tradition came together, and kept people coming back.

The Grateful Bears Collection celebrates that connection. Cal blue and gold meet the unmistakable artwork of the Grateful Dead in a tribute to two Northern California institutions shaped by curiosity, independence, and a community that has always moved to its own rhythm.

To bring the story into focus, we teamed up with legendary music photographer Jay Blakesberg, whose lens has documented the Grateful Dead and its extended family for decades. The result is a meeting of past and present—made for Golden Bears, Deadheads, and everyone still following the music.
