On September 14, 1982, University Hall traded Wahoowa chants for Jack Straw and Bird Song as the Grateful Dead rolled into Charlottesville. For one night, UVA’s usual ACC energy took a backseat to soaring jams and spaced-out solos. Cavaliers fans—more used to rallying behind Ralph Sampson—found themselves twirling in tie-dye instead, as Peggy-O drifted through the air. The band’s California cool collided with Jeffersonian tradition in a way that just worked.
