The Grateful Dead’s influence in Athens, Georgia, and at the University of Georgia is significant, particularly through their shows in and around the Atlanta area (37, but who's counting). Athens is home vibrant music scene, which was already burgeoning with acts like R.E.M., Widespread Panic, and The B-52's. Athens is known as a birthplace of modern alternative rock and new wave music, and was also home to the country's first legit college music scene in the 1970s.
