A favorite of the Grateful Dead, the band played the University of Oregon often, most notably at MacArthur Court and Autzen Stadium. From their early ’69 show at Mac Court (one of their biggest venues at the time) to Autzen in ’78, Oregon wasn’t just a tour stop...it was a second home. The Dead played on or around campus more than 20 times, making UO one of their most historically relevant college campuses. Oregon was home turf for much of the extended Dead family, Ken Kesey, the Pranksters, and a road crew full of locals. Look up the Veneta show. You’ll get it. These weren’t just gigs, they were reunions. That spirit still hums through Eugene: in the tailgates, river swims, print shops, garage bands, and paint-streaked vans chasing that same feeling. Call it homegrown psychedelia. Call it Northwest soul. Whatever it is, it started at Mac Court, and it never left.
