Columbus wasn’t just another stop, it was the site of Dead lore in the making. On September 30, 1976, the Dead lit up Mershon Auditorium on campus, delivering an unforgettable set with “The Music Never Stopped” and “Sugaree” ringing through Buckeye country. But the real legend came earlier, on Halloween night in 1971, when the band tore through the Ohio Theatre downtown. That show, later immortalized as Dick’s Picks Volume 2, captured the Dead at their raw, high-flying best, opening with a thunderous “Dark Star,” sliding into “Sugar Magnolia,” and closing with a “Casey Jones” that shook the walls like the Horseshoe on game day. Like the Dead’s fearless jams, Ohio State thrives on energy that builds and bursts, whether it’s a last-second rally in the Shoe or a night that stretches past dawn on High Street. This collection bridges Buckeye pride with the Dead’s improvisational spirit, honoring moments where the music, the team, and the crowd all move as one.
