The Dead played a legendary show at the home of the Trojans, LA Memorial Coliseum in June of 1991, to epic fanfare and to set the stage for a string of Summer Music Festivals. Sound technician Dan Healy spent weeks studying the Coliseum to find the best location for the band's speaker towers. This performance, along with their earlier shows at venues like the Hollywood Palladium, drew a large following, including many USC students.

The band's presence in Los Angeles, especially during the vibrant countercultural scene of the 1960s and 1970s, helped solidify Deadhead culture throughout the region. Their connection with Southern California’s student population was crucial in embedding the Grateful Dead’s influence into the fabric of the Los Angeles music scene, linking generations of Deadheads with the spirit of Los Angeles.
